Camera Car and Tracking Shots
Speed only reads on screen when the camera is moving as well.
A car in motion cannot be filmed from the side of the road. We shoot it from a camera car: a tracking vehicle carrying a stabilised head that keeps the subject framed while both vehicles move. It works for cars, motorbikes, bicycles, runners, boats and anything that has to look fast.
Tracking shots are planned with the road rather than against it: closed roads, private circuits, industrial areas, the passes around Turin and Como, or streets in Milan and Rome at the hours when they are empty.
What we shoot
Driving shots for automotive and tyre brands. Chase and follow shots in narrative scenes. Product films where the object is a vehicle and the location is a road. Cycling, running and sport, where the camera has to hold a subject that changes speed. Arrivals and departures for events, and city driving for travel and tourism films.
The same setup covers static beauty shots on the vehicle, interiors with the camera rigged to the car, and drone coverage of the same route, so one road closure produces a complete sequence instead of a single angle.
How we work
First the route: we drive it before the shooting day, at the same hour, and we choose the stretches that give the light and the background the film needs. Then the authorisations, which for a road or a circuit take time and are part of the production, not an afterthought.
On the day the two vehicles work as one: a driver who has done this before, a fixed radio channel, agreed speeds and a shot order that goes from the widest to the tightest so nothing is missing at the end. We provide the tracking car and the stabilised head, and we bring in a specialised vehicle with a crane arm when a shot cannot be made any other way.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need the road to be closed?
Not always. Many shots can be made in normal traffic, at legal speeds, with the two vehicles at a safe distance. A closed road or a circuit is needed when the speed, the stunt or the framing requires it, and in that case we handle the permits and the safety plan.
Do you own the camera car?
We provide the tracking vehicle and the stabilised head for most productions. For a low loader, a crane arm or a high-speed rig we work with a specialised supplier and keep the coordination, the crew and the look on our side.
Can drone and camera car be used on the same shot?
Yes, and it is usually the right choice: the drone gives the geography of the road, the camera car gives the speed at eye level. Planned together, both come out of one closure and one day.
